Food Toxicology

Food Toxicology Overview

Food toxicology forms the basis for food safety. Safety measures are developed and implemented to eliminate chemical and biological toxins found in food, as such, an understanding of toxicology is required. The discipline studies the characteristics and nature of food toxins. It seeks to understand how they can be detected, their effect on the human body when consumed and how toxin exposures can be treated.

Toxicology relies on three main principles. These principles are that the effect of treatment doses depend on the extent of toxin exposure. Also, toxin treatments engage in absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of toxins from the body. Lastly, there is an Acceptable Daily Intake level of toxins which has no detrimental effect on human health. Toxicology is very relevant to addressing global food safety concerns. Although the complexities of food contaminants make this difficult to implement, operations in the discipline indicate how research can be harnessed for food safety. Other stakeholders including governments and manufactures must also get involved to ensure the safety of all food products. At Tengrain Science we are committed to ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food all year round. To achieve this, we provide a range of research related services that you can benefit from.
