Agrophysics Overview

Agro physics integrates agronomy with basic physics principles. Similar to applied chemistry, agrophysics is most applicable to soil science as it addresses physical properties that affect crop production. These physical properties include soil texture, structure, colour, porosity, and density which affect nutrient absorption, aeration and water holding capacity of soil. Agrophysics is deployed in the development of soil monitoring systems and determination of pollutants in food products, and ensures the soil performs optimally with limited environmental trade-off in intensifying food production. It reduces soil degradation and emission of greenhouse gases. Overall, agrophysics facilitates efficient resource utilization.

As a multidisciplinary approach, the concept of agrophysics is important considering the role soils play in sustained food production and in climate change adaptation and mitigation. To produce sufficient food to feed the world, soils must be adequately protected and managed to perform optimally in all seasons. In capturing carbon from the atmosphere, soil physical properties and health are overly important. Therefore, awareness on the technicalities of agrophysics should be intensified to enable more farmers adopt the strategy. Sustainable soil management practices that protect soils should also be encouraged amongst farmers.
