Food Policy and Practices Overview

Food policies govern practices in the food industry. They are guiding principles relating to the production, processing, distribution, handling, preparation, marketing and purchase of food items. Usually, food policies are formulated and implemented to regulate practices and enforce industry standards in the interest of stakeholders including farmers, manufacturers and consumers, the environment or the economy. They may be formulated at community, state, national, regional and global levels.
Food policies play a significant role in improving agricultural production either by incentivizing the adoption of technologies, stabilizing prices, protecting the environment or addressing any other areas that affect target stakeholders. At regional and global levels, food policies foster trade agreements between countries. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) which is the apex food policy formulation body in the world has over the years designed policies targeted at improving nutrition, fostering rural development, facilitating efficiency of production methods and eliminating global hunger. The European Union’s Food Safety Policy which seeks to ensure the safety of food from production to consumption in the region is a typical example of a food policy.
