Food Health and Nutrition

Food Health and Nutrition Overview

As a result of poorly developed food systems, it is estimated that nearly 10% and 9% of the world’s population are hungry and malnourished respectively. These are people with no ready access to sufficient amounts of safe and affordable food. They risk exposure to different forms of diseases and urgently require food nutrients to survive. Food plays a major role in health and nutrition by supplying the body with essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, water, carbohydrates and proteins) required to maintain proper body function and survive. Energy foods for example are burned to fuel body metabolism while proteins help the body repair worn-out tissue.

Health, nutrition and food are strongly interlinked. Their relationship can be approached from two angles, which are that the food industry directly meets the nutritional needs of consumers through eating. Secondly, the food industry provides raw materials required for treating ailments in medicine. Nutrition refers to the utilization of nutrients contained in food which influences health and well-being. Good health and nutrition come from feeding on the right food mix. This keeps the body strong, ready and able to fight against diseases at all times. Because the food industry ensures availability of food nutrient components in a range of varieties all year round, it remains a big business which is currently valued at over $8.7 trillion and estimated to grow by nearly 5% annually. By involving more farmers through capacity building, Tengrain Science enables the sustained production of safe and healthy foods.
