Agricultural Development

Agricultural Development Overview

Prior to civilization, agriculture mainly served the purpose of meeting household food needs. In today’s world, agriculture not only functions to end hunger and malnutrition, but also contributes to medicine, construction, fashion, and other industries. It makes up a significant portion of the global economy; contributes to providing employment, bridging income gaps, and has improved the livelihoods of over one billion smallholder farmers around the world. Beyond subsistent systems that catered mainly to family needs, agriculture has evolved to function as a tool for strengthening bilateral relationships between countries.

With the automation of processes, speedy delivery and overall increased efficiency, technology played an outstanding role in agricultural development. Processing, storage, and transportation all facilitated by technology eliminate wastages in the food production chain, while artificial intelligence facilitates effective monitoring. Microbiology on the hand enables the manipulation of crops genetic make-up to produce high yielding, eco-friendly varieties with lower input requirements.

Despite the progress achieved so far, the world’s changing dynamics emphasizes the need to do more. Farmers in many rural communities still rely on traditional farming methods, with no access to market information and poor extension service linkages. The latter makes it difficult to access information on new and improved farming methods. Therefore, to create a balance, build sustainable food systems and achieve faster results, the gap between poor rural farmers predominant in developing countries and educated well-informed farmers in developed countries must be closed. By providing expert advisory services to agribusinesses, Tengrain Science is actively involved in contributing to agricultural development.
